Following a long career, climbing the corporate ladder, at 52, Adele Cable took a leap of faith and embarked on a new career as an SJP financial adviser.

While initially she thought her age might be a hindrance, in fact, it turned out to be a strength. Adele’s decades of experience in training, building relationships and sales gave her an edge when transitioning into wealth management. These skills have been crucial in growing her now thriving – and award winning – practice, Advanced Wealth in Buckinghamshire.

Climbing the corporate ladder

As a fresh graduate in her twenties, Adele arrived in England on a ferry from Dublin with only £80 in her pocket, but eager to start work.
Over the next three decades, Adele achieved a lot. She worked her way up the ranks of corporate management to various director roles across training and sales, overseeing teams in different corners of the world. Adele’s ambition and competitive nature were always the key drivers of her success.

Time to change direction

But as she approached her fifties she knew she needed a change. Adele had successfully reached the top of her chosen field, but her corporate role was no longer challenging her the way it used to. She was looking for something else, but wasn’t sure what – or if – a second career was the answer. What Adele did know was that she wanted to spend more time with her family, keep learning, and continue to connect with people.
Adele was in her kitchen at home when she first thought about a career in wealth management. Her husband’s SJP financial adviser was visiting and suggested she consider it as a career path.

“This career has been a major game changer for me and my family.”

Despite initial concerns about her age – which was, and still is, lower than the industry average of 58 - and lack of financial planning knowledge, Adele decided to find out more.

The leap of faith

The next day she was on a call with the SJP Academy. Less than a year later she was a qualified financial planner with chartered status and fellowship in wealth management. She is now in the top qualified in the UK and proud to have corporate, trust and tax planning qualifications.

The guidance and support from the Academy was instrumental in helping Adele recognise she could draw on the skills and qualities she had mastered in her previous career to become a successful adviser.
When reflecting on her sales background Adele says: “ It was always about teaching people to understand the needs of others, and how to deliver a solution that would meet those needs. It was really good training for this job, because we just want to find out what people want to achieve. And it's so exciting to be able to get them to do that.”

From start up to success

Since qualifying three years ago, Adele has built an award winning practice with a diverse range of clients, from premier league footballers to those living in her local community.
In 2023, she was recognised as the top graduate at the Academy and ranked in the top ten of SJP single partner practices. She has since grown a team of three advisers – one of which is her daughter and recent SJP Academy graduate Victoria - to meet the increasing demand for financial advice.

To other women considering a later stage career move into financial advice, Adele says: “If you have a passion to help individuals to have peace of mind and excitement about their finances, I’d strongly recommends speaking the SJP Academy. This career has been a major game changer for me and my family.

It’s given me a brilliant opportunity to have a lifestyle that suits my family and I’m so privileged to work with great clients who continue to enthusiastically recommend me to other and a great team, who are all focused on excellence.”
