The Partnership use BSP to facilitate succession planning and enable growth
St. James’s Place (SJP) today announces the completion of its 5,000th Business Sale & Purchase (BSP) transaction, marking a significant milestone for the Partnership and underlining the continued strength of its succession and business building framework.
Originally launched in 1992, the BSP proposition has evolved over three decades alongside major regulatory shifts including the Retail Distribution Review and Consumer Duty. From enabling Partners to sell their businesses outright, the proposition has expanded to also include partial sales, Management Buy Ins and Adviser ownership. This gives Partners, advisers and management teams a structured route to establish, grow and ultimately realise the value of their businesses.
Today, the BSP market is highly active, with 250–300 transactions completed each year and a total annual transaction value of around £200 million. This activity reflects the demand for succession planning, which prioritises continuity of client service and long-term business stability across SJP’s Partnership.
Supporting scale, succession and growth
SJP facilitates business loans to Partners to help fund acquisitions and support the next generation of advisers as they take on retiring or downsizing practices. These loans support continuity of client outcomes, help entrepreneurial advisers build high quality long-term businesses, and contribute to strong retention of advisers, clients and funds under management.
A Partner case study: Edward Whitehouse
To mark the 5,000th transaction, SJP has highlighted the experience of Edward Whitehouse, a Partner who has used the BSP scheme multiple times to grow his family-owned business.
Whitehouse said the BSP framework and Partner Finance support were central to enabling sustainable expansion: “The beauty of the BSP process is how clearly it’s laid out for you. SJP provide the information you need, the process moves quickly, and you can be confident that everything will transfer smoothly at completion. It’s a unique structure that enables a business like ours to continue scaling, and for Partners with the right ambition, it really is a fantastic opportunity.”
Commenting on the milestone, James Rainbow, CEO of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, said: “Reaching our 5,000th BSP transaction is a testament to the strength of our Partnership and the entrepreneurial ambition of our advisers. BSP has always been about supporting continuity for clients while enabling Partners to build, grow and realise long-term value in their businesses. As the profession evolves, our focus remains on giving advisers the right framework, the right support and the right opportunities to succeed. This milestone reflects that commitment.”
