Patrick McGrath has been a client of St. James’s Place since 2010. He explains why his SJP Partner’s advice has proved invaluable for him, his business and its 70-strong workforce.

Wine is in the McGrath family’s DNA. Patrick grew up in the wine trade – his late father was a Master of Wine, and they were the first father and son Master of Wine combination in the world.

Patrick started out working as a Retail Assistant in Victoria Wine, and during his career, he’s worked for Grants of St. James’s and Mentzendorff. He joined Hatch Mansfield as Managing Director in 1994.

“Our main business is importing wine, and we represent a number of internationally acclaimed, family-owned wine producers, including Taittinger,” explains Patrick. “In the past ten years, our turnover has grown substantially. Back then, we were turning over about £50 or £60 million. Now, we’re turning more than £120 million.”

In a pioneering joint venture with Taittinger, the business bought 69 acres of Kent countryside and began planting vines in 2016, aiming to launch a premium English sparkling wine within ten years. “Domaine Evremond’s first bottle should be here this September,” says Patrick.

Domaine Evremond is, like Hatch Mansfield itself, very much a ‘friends and family’ venture, reflecting the independent, family-focused philosophies of both companies.

It’s a personal, long-standing relationship – not dissimilar to Patrick and his company’s relationship with their St. James’s Place Partner.

”Off the charts” employee benefits – including financial clinics

Patrick and Hatch Mansfield have worked with their SJP Partner, John, for more than 13 years. John and three of his advisers have a very close relationship with the company, advising most of its 70-strong workforce.

It’s a testament to the company ethos that several generations of families are working at Hatch Mansfield. “We invest in our people, training them and sending them out to visit the vineyards and meet the producers they’re representing,” says Patrick.

“We want them to stay with us. A happy staff is a hardworking staff. We’ve got three fathers and sons, two mothers and daughters, and my daughter, India, has joined the business to work on the new Domaine Evremond brand,” he continues. “Quite a change for her; she had been working for The HALO Trust, clearing landmines.”

Hatch Mansfield is a business built on personal relationships, and Patrick is adamant that his team deserve the best. “We spend so much time working – people work incredibly hard here. So my mantra is, I want people to have fun – and choose to stay.”

That means offering one of the best benefits packages in the business. “We believe in being as generous as we can, whether it’s maternity leave, pension contributions or holidays.”

“Patrick’s being modest,” adds John, calling the corporate staff benefits “off the charts”.

The corporate-benefits packages set up by him and his team provide ongoing staff support for everything from pensions and death in service cover to physiotherapy and mental-wellbeing appointments.

Everyone receives full income protection as standard and the option for private medical cover. All staff are enrolled in a 10% non-contributory pension, or 15% for some senior employees.

“Without making him blush,” says Patrick, “John has been there beside us the whole way through for the past 13 years, guiding and helping us to give our staff the best."

John and his team also run face-to-face financial clinics for the Hatch Mansfield staff five or six times a year so that people can talk to them confidentially about managing their personal finances. Between them, John’s advisers can have as many as 30 meetings in a day.

“We’ve had conversations about everything from university fees to pensions, how a trust works to divorce. I’m booked in for at least two ‘I’m nearly retired’ conversations at the next clinic,” says John. “And somehow, we find time for lunch!”

Helping employees retire comfortably

Apart from Patrick, there are people working at Hatch Mansfield who have been there since the company was founded 30 years ago. “We started out as a very young team – now we’re starting to retire,” he says. “And John has helped so many of my staff retire early and retire well.”

Last year, John helped three Directors retire well before 65 on excellent pensions. They’re now looking forward to well-deserved and comfortable retirements.

“I got a WhatsApp today from one Director who’s semi-retired now,” adds John, “showing me the once-in-a-lifetime Antarctica cruise he and his wife are planning. It’s personally rewarding to be able to say to someone: ‘Go ahead and book that holiday – you’ll have more than enough money.’”

Later this year, Domaine Evremond will open its first bottle of sparkling wine, toasting the brand-new vintage – and also raising a glass to the ongoing relationship between Patrick, the Hatch Mansfield team and John.

“I’ve come to rely on the fact that my staff are so well looked after by John and his team,” says Patrick.

“John and St. James’s Place are financial-advice specialists. We’re not, we’re wine specialists. In the end, it comes down to trust. There’s no point using an organisation as professional as St. James’s Place unless you trust them to give good advice. It’s a personal relationship.“
